Alimony was created back in a time when women didn't usually work, to support them as if they were married. It slightly changed to be a way to make up for the loss of a career when a women stopped working because of the marriage, usually to raise children.
Now, it's usually granted only if the women stopped work for kids or marriage and needs time to get a career going or get an education. It usually isn't for life or until marriage anymore.
When I was divorced, I did not get alimony, only child support. I got some of my graduate education while we were married.
