How do I fix my wireless router?

My dlink wireless router suddenly stopped working this morning. However, when I plug the ethernet cable directly to my laptop I get internet access.

The wireless portion of the router is separate from the wired part. If the wireless burns out, you will need to replace the router.

Because you asked this twice, I am going to answer it twice. I hope one of the two questions is removed.

First, make sure you keep track of which wires/cables go where.

Unplug everything - unplug the ethernet cables, the cable connecting the router to the modem (usually a second device that the router connects to, which is connected to the wall), any other connecting cables, and the plugs (from both the device and the wall), so that all devices and cords are separate. Count to 10 (if you're really paranoid, count to 30).

Then, start from the wall and turn on one thing at a time. Here's how I've done it: plug in the modem's power cord, then plug that into the modem. Turn on the modem (if it doesn't turn on already). Plug in the network cable that plugs into the wall (there usually is one), and plug that into whatever it was plugged into before (this is why it is important to keep track). Plug in the wireless router and turn it on.

Finally, connect the router and the modem, then check if your connection works. If not, go back and start over (yes, from the beginning), connecting the router to the modem before plugging in/turning on the router (doesn't hurt to check).

If the above process fails, contact technical support for the router (can either be the router manufacturer or your ISP, but I'd ask the ISP first). Either one should be able to help troubleshoot. They'll probably have you check the configuration.

You could also check the configuration on your own if you feel brave enough (please don't do this unless you're sure you know what you're doing). If none of this works, check your wireless configuration, usually found by going to 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.0.1 in your browser. When you're there, the login is usually admin with password admin. There should be some configuration for wireless (if I remember correctly). Make sure it's turned on and allowing connections. You may have to enable DHCP if it isn't already enabled (unless you have printers on the network assigned to specific addresses, but you should know that).

If everything here fails, you'll need to buy a new router. Make sure you are getting the same kind of router as your old one.
