Can Wal-Mart do this? or is it wrong?

My boyfriend has been working at Wal-Mart as a cashier for 5 months.
The first 3 months are considered "probation period" and they say they won't fire you if you make it up to then.
Today they fired him, and everybody else that started at the same time as he did.
He's never been late, or missed work and he excels at his job.

Did Wal-Mart have the right to do this even if he made it 2 months past the probation period and had no reason to fire him or the others?
Or do they need to have a reason?

No rude comments please, I'm just trying to figure it out because I honestly don't know.

The laws of employee/employer relations vary from state to state. Unless there is some sort of employment agreement (labor contract, etc) an employer can terminate an employee at any time for any reason or no reason with or without notice. Same goes the other way - your boyfriend can quit at any time for any reason with or without notice. There was probably some underlying reason (not enough work or something) but they don't have to tell him anything other than he is terminated. It sounds as if he worked enough to qualify for unemployment though, so I'd start by filing for that.

Depends on the state. Some states are "right to work" states, which means the employer can fire you for any reason. Other states have laws against firing without good cause.

Even a right to work state will have unemployment. And there are other jobs out there. He's better off without walmart, anyway.

Most states, employees work "at will". This means you can quit for any reason and you can be fired for any reason (with the exception of your race, religion, etc). The only exception would be if you worked under a union contract which states otherwise. Since no one at Walmart is union, they can legally do it.

Welcome to the wonderful world of "at will" employment. Your employer can fire you at any time, for any reason (except for certain protected classes - sexuality, race, gender, that sort of thing). They can fire you because they don't like your shoes, your deodorant, or your hair color. They can fire you for not doing your job well... or for doing it TOO well and making your boss look bad.

In short, any reason at all, and there's exactly f**k all you can do about it.

At best, you can collect unemployment... assuming they don't contest it.

they can legally fire him if they feel like it. all they have to say is "it is not working out" that makes it to where even if they fired him because they just dont like him, then they are covered.

That is how it works in the working field. you can get fired for any reason be it they dont like your hairstyle or the way you walk.
