Purchasing Windows 8?

I will be purchasing Windows 8 from a person and meeting him face to face. However I want to check the product key code before I install the software on my computer. Is there a way to check the product key code to see if it is a actual legit product key code on Microsoft website before I purchase the software from this person and before I install Windows 8 on my computer.

I know it is better to purchase Windows 8 from a retailer.

Just make sure you see the box with the holographic MS emblem if not don't buy and dont buy if the disk doesnt say microsoft, theres no way of checking other than installing and activating _ I have a bad feeling about this I think it will be a copy - I hope im wrong.
