Do you mean Cal State LA? Because the Starlight Inn is near that college, not USC, although it's a couple of miles away from USC Health Campus, but 10+ miles from the main USC campus. The area around the USC main campus is rough. The campus is secure, but outside the campus is not a good area. As AHunch posted, you want to stay at these hotels near USC, because they are right across the street/very close to USC (within the USC security patrol boundary) and walkable:
Radisson Hotel Los Angeles Midtown at USC 3540 South Figueroa Street Los Angeles, CA 90007 (213) 748-4141 radisson.com
Vagabond Inn Los Angeles at USC 3101 South Figueroa Street Los Angeles, CA 90007 vagabondinn.com
If you are under 21, be sure to ask if they will rent to you. Many motels/hotels in LA only rent to 21+, and they will check your ID when you check in, and turn you away even with a reservation if you do not meet their age minimum. Too much liability renting to under 21's.
Here is the USC list of recommended hotels, many are more expensive and further away, in downtown LA where all the tall buildings are or at LA Live. http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/visit/class_visit.html
If you aren't driving, you'll want to stay very close, as public transportation isn't the greatest (although it's ok near USC, but the areas you might go through are sketchy) and you don't want to take it at night.
Google: USC 90089 and click on the Map. Click on the Marker > Search Nearby > Motels Hotels > Search. BUT, you should check with someone who knows the area to make sure the motel you find is in a safe area!
Are you going to visit USC because you might want to attend there? If so, be sure to sign up for a tour of the main campus, and also for a specific school if they offer tours (Meet USC). The campus has stuff going on during the summer, there are prospective student tours, freshman orientations, summer school classes, high school programs, regular classes, etc.

Is there something you need to do at USC during that time? If not, you probably don't want to be staying near campus. School is out for the summer in the middle of May and there is not a lot going on around campus in the middle of June. - the Radisson and Vagabond are the only recommended hotels that are near the campus.
