No, in fact the highest temperature recorded in Barcelona was on the 27th August, 2010, when it reached 37.4*C.
You will see from the attached that in 2012, there were a couple of occasions when the temperature reached a high of 36*C, during August -

No, certainly not. It'll get up in the 30s, but 40 would be very unusual. It's right by the ocean, so the sea air cools the city down.
