We go to the beach all the time, but I'd like to take my dog to a calm lake for swimming with worrying about the waves.

Basin AH1 Dog Park
This Dog Park is located at 4257 W. Alamos at the El Capitan cross street (Fresno). The park is open from May through November from 7am to 10pm daily. The park offers a dog wading pool for your pups to cool off in during the hot summer months.
Check out online dog park directories online. Many include lakes and beaches that allow dogs. The most comprehensive I have seen is the one that Dog Friendly does (see below). Some local pools may have a "dog day" at the end of the season, as well. Find a local publication or website that lists dog- or pet-related activities, and check it often.
