What is the effectiveness of Dual GPU's?

Right now in my Computer is a GTX 660. I want to buy a 690 soon when I save enough money for it. What I want to know is if I should keep my 660 in there to be a dual gpu with the 690 or give it to my brother whose looking to build a PC? My first queation is, how do I get the full effectiveness from dual Gpu's. Secondly, is the performance level rather significant from just one. Finally, I make YouTube videos, I plan to record the next generation games on the maximum settings. My other components in my computer easily meet the requirements but I'm wondering if the second GPU is neccesary for a solid 60 FPS or if the 690 is enough?

You can't SLI GTX 660 with GTX 690. And GTX 690 is already a dual GPU. You should give the 660 to your brother. I forgot to say that's day and night between those two GPUs.
