Name for a standardbred mare?

As I continue my search I think I may have found the perfect horse..
She's young, 4
Small than I like but I think she will be ok, 14.3 (possibly still growing since she was starved)
A rescue, what a wanted!
And a great price!
She's beautiful too!
She's a standardbred, from my research they seem to be fairly good horses for lower level jumping and dressage, am I right?

Anyway, I need help picking out a name! I want something different than her original name since she is getting a fresh, new start! (I know people advise against changing it but I think I'll make an exception so no comments!!!)

She is black with a white star on her forehead!

I've come up with

Whisper
Ebony
Misty
Charm
Shadow
Echo
Domino
Faith
Hero
Calypso

Also possibly interested in some show names! :)

Thanks guys!

She is trained to walk, trot and canter :) She has done some basic dressage (she is a trotter). My friend deals a lot with standardbreds and saddlebreds and says as long as I train her to jump, she should be a lovely jumper!

Hello, congratulations on the new horse! She sounds like a cutie.

For the names you had already chosen, I really like the name Charm, and Faith.

I have came up with a few names I would like to suggest to you.
* Cocoa
* Dakota - I really like this one, mainly because of the actress (Dakota Fanning). Also, this means "friend" in Indian.

I hope you enjoy my suggestions. Good luck with the horse -- xoxo.

Standardbreds tend to be nice, calm horses, but if they've been raced they may be a bit hyper. They are pretty fast movers, so that can be scary if you're a beginner. They're hard to slow down.

If you want to do dressage, make sure you get a trotter, not a pacer. Even if a judge is willing to look at a pace when a trot is called for, it's much harder to collect/extend a pace without breaking than it is a trot.

Further, you may have to teach the horse to canter - most standardbreds have been trained to only trot, never to break into a canter. This can take a LOT of effort.

They're not particularly smooth to ride. They've been bred to trot fast, to be driven, not ridden.

Has she been trained to ride? Again, most are trained only to drive.

I've never seen one used for jumping. I live in an area with lots of standardbreds, though most are Amished out many are converted to riding. I don't know about their jumping abilities.

On the names, I like Ebony and Calypso. All the names you've chosen are pretty commonly used in the horse world.

For show names, I like to use the stable name as well, like Ebony Dancer or Ebony Star. Or maybe Aye Calypso.

Did you want extra suggestions?

Black Diamond (barn name Di)

Obsidian (it's a beautiful black stone)

Onyx Night (another black gemstone)

Black Minx

Night Mare

Night Star

Dark of Night

Blackberry Cobbler

Raven

Raven Ride

Good luck with her!

I like Sierra, personally. I also had a Standardbred who foaled an Olympic Quality horse. Her name was Queen Guinivere (if you like that xD I have a palomino named Lena, and a Quarter named Bella. I like Echo, Domino, and Calypso, though :D
