How to transfer game save data from an external hard drive to a ps3?

I lost my game data once with the first Ps3 I had, it got the yellow light of death and the play station itself stopped working beyond repair. Now my second ps3, the super slim bought last october, is showing hard drive problems and I may have to replace the hard drive itself or format it thus losing all my data again. The ps3 won't turn on properly so I can't perform the ethernet cable solution.

I'm just thinking that if I do end up having to change or format my hard drive then I at least want a back up in case it happens again in the future and not have to lose all my data a third time.

So, if i get an external hard drive and back up my game data on it, will I be able to transfer my game data over to another ps3's hard drive and not get the "data belongs to another user" message?

in reference: Here is my question on the problems my PS3 has been experiencing, if that helps.

Any other way I can salvage my game data, that does not require having two ps3s, is welcome, please do tell.

an no, i'm not saying i'll use another user's data. I just mentioned that part because i've seen complaints over the net of people getting that message even if the data was their own

Also i know i can't salvage my current data, i mean to ask this in case it happens again with another ps3 or hard drive

To continue from last question:

Unfortunately there's no way to retrieve the data if it's not working. The only way to do a backup is if you can get to the XMB to access the system menu. No other PS3 will read it and no computer will read it due to the encryption. So unfortunately, unless you already had a backup, there's nothing you can do to save the data.

However, once you do get it working again, you can use an external hard drive formatted as FAT32 to backup the data. You can do this through the Backup Utility:

Settings > System Settings > Backup Utility > Back Up

Then to restore:

Settings > System Settings > Backup Utility > Restore

Once again, you must use an external hard drive formatted as FAT32 to backup and restore the data.

EDIT: Sometimes, if using another system, it won't read the data because it wasn't made with that PS3. It is encrypted specifically on each PS3, so it locks the profile information. So that's what it refers to. On that note, if you do get another PS3, then you won't be able to transfer most of your data without using the ethernet method with the Data Transfer Utility. Otherwise, you can just backup and restore your data on the same PS3 as needed.

saves data are about 10MB per game, backing these up is alot faster than backing up the entire drive.

there are some games that won't allow you to copy "saves" locally. they are exclusive for PS+ members, especially online games that are restricted by the developers to prevents cheater on the online server. However you can transfer these "saves" information from one console over to the next. I done it and it worked, just plug a USB flashdrive or USB hdd and copy the "saves" data then unload it on a new console.

now I have not give my save data for any body else to use, so I can't answer that question.

heres what you need to do:
1. make sure the ps3 is turned off.
2. push and hold the power button. (the ps3 will beep like its turning on, but keep holding the power button...it should beep one or two more times then automatically shut off.)
3.as soon as it turns off, release the power button. as soon as you release the power button push and keep holding it again (the ps3 will beep one once then after a few seconds it will give you two fast beeps.)
4.after you hear two fast beeps you can let go of the powerbutton, now your screen should have a message displaying "connect your controller using a usb cable, then push the PS button"
5. follow the onscreen steps, then choose "restore file system base" and if that dosent do anything, repeat all the previous steps but them choose "rebuild system data base" instead of the file system.

doing all of these steps should fix your ps3 without deleting any GAME SAVE DATA, or making you format/buy a new harddrive. but one of the options MAY delete any song/ playlists and messages you have

heres a video tutorial on how to do it if your confused:

(i did not make this video so i take no credit for it, its just a random tutorial video i found on youtube) this will work for all ps3s (fat, slim, and super slim)

I hope it works :D

If you hit triangle while on the main folder that you want to put on the hd it should have an option to copy. just click that and put it on the hd as it is connected.
