Can I swap a 3rd Gen. i5 or i7 for a 1st Gen. i7 processor?
I'm planning to return what was represented as a new custom i7 CPU computer, and seems like maybe is really an old Dell Studio XPS DT8100 (seems like I got conned), in a generic (not Dell) case (with a tired 1st Gen. i7 processor...2009)...that is not performing at all. If all else fails, would it be feasible to switch to a newer Intel CPU--and make a "win" out of this disaster? THANKS!!

a cpu needs support it needs the right socket it needs the right RAM and thats because it uses specific CHIPSETS. these Chipsets do NOT support different generations. in fact it is the very reason why a 1st gen is different to a 2nd gen it is because the CHIPSET just got better.
you can view details of any Intel cpu on the ARK and usually on the left is a link called Compatible Products clicking this will reveal a list of Chipsets that CPU will work with clicking one of those will show you a list of Which CPU's that Specific Chipset was made for. =============================== In addition to this, the complete list of CPU's for a given chipset is NEVER FULLY implemented by Dell. it is restricted(reduced) in the following ways
1) for a Dated BIOS dell only include CPU's up to that Date. Others are NOT enabled. 2) each chipset may support more than one RAM speed(FSB) The CPU is clocked ....at those speeds. Dell may NOT implement all Speeds. eg 677/800/1066/1333 ....dell may only implement 800/1066, so devices based on 667/1333 will NOT be enabled.
this information is written in the tech specs.
although Dell fit FoxConn mobo's, because they tailor the BIOS and frimware, you will never find details of that FoxConn mobo on the FoxConn site. so you have to make do with the out of date poor dell documentation that never gets updated.
below are links for Inthe H57 the chipset quoted in tech specs and i7 870 cpu
1st Gen i7 is socket LGA 1156 if its an 800 series model or socket LGA 1366 if its a 900 series model.3rd Gen CPUs use LGA1155 sockets which is incompatable with the other two sockets.
