I recently got a hold of some very new Shimano Tourney AO70 7-speed shifters. Can it be used to replace the Sora 2200 8-speed shifter? As a back up.
*Chain & cassette are 8-speed
* Rear Derailleur is a Sora 2300
* Front Derailleur is a Sora 2200

No. The gap between each rear cog is different between an 8 speed and a 7 speed. Not good "even if" you want to use them as a back up. Must be 8 speed shifters with 8 speed cassette (or freewheel).
I suspect that since you seem to have purchased the Tourney stuff you will try it anyway. Waste of money, waste of time.
