How do I solve this math problem?

.55 - 1.645 * the square root of .55(1-.55)/220. I keep coming up with -0.399, but the correct answer is 0.495. Can you please explain to me what I am doing wrong? I am multiplying .55 and .45 together and then divide that by 220. Once I get that, I get the square root of that number, and then finish solving the equation. Obviously I am doing something wrong. Thanks.

I got an answer of 0.495.

Now the method you described sounds right but are you actually doing it correctly.

You can actually do this in one go on your calculator but I will first do it your way.

√[0.55(1 - 0.55)/220] = 0.03354

0.55 - 1.645 x 003354 = 0.495

To do in one go on your calculator enter

0.55 - 1.645 x √(0.55(1 - 0.55)÷220) =
