Someone at work is asking me to lie for them?

I have a part time job on campus that I really like and it's been about four weeks now. One of the other students that also works there part time leaves every day an hour early but reports his total hours. Sooner or later he's going to get caught and he has asked me to lie about the time he leave if I'm asked.

I like the guy and enjoy working with him and we even share two of the same friends but I really don't want to have to lie for him. On the other hand I don't want to be a jerk and sell him out either since he's pretty cool to me. Has anyone else ever been in similar situation? What did you do?

It's up to you to square it with your conscience. I can only tell you what I'd do. I wouldn't go out of my way to rat the guy out because frankly, it's none of my business. It's between him and the boss. I'd refuse to out-and-out lie for him, though, and I'd have told him so when he asked me to. Unless you work right next to each other in a small space, if you don't actually see the guy leave, then you can tell the boss truthfully, "I don't know; I haven't seen him in a while."

Don't look at your watch when he leaves, and just say you don't know what time he left.

Try to avoid being asked, but if you are, you have to be honest and you also need to warn him of that.
