Can I start creating a website WITHOUT my domain registered?

Hey there, you computer savvy ner- I mean people. I was wondering if it was possible to start creating a website (Installing scripts and such) without first transfering a domain name to a host? I have Dreamhost and my domain name was purchased on Godaddy, but they wont let me transfer it for two months! I mean... Whadafukisupwitdat? Anyways... My domain IS on dreamhost it just says "unknown" under registration if that means anything.

Also, if I CAN start creating the website, should I wait for the trial period to end and the subscription to kick-in? And would it even be wise to create a website that didn't have a domain name for the first few months? What are the ramifications for such a thing?

Any help would be appreciated!

My suggestion would be to first check your account information or contact your web hosting company. Many times, many webhosting companies will set you up initially with a domain name containing THEIR name. So you would get like a "www._______.dreamhost.com" or a "www.dreamhost.com/________. So that domain name can be yours to use for your programming. Later, you can "direct/point" you domain to that address or just completely transfer the domain name. (If you transfer the domain name, then you might have to later come back and adjust your site links... but it just depends on you.)

You create the website on your PC and upload it to the service for testing. Then you go live whenever you are ready. But my point is you want to be creating the site and storing all original content, graphics logos photos and so on on you local computer. Your local copy becomes the "backup" to the copy on the server. It doesn't matter whether the server crashes or you change web service providers, you just upload your site to the new service. Now, if you use some really crappy ISP's online drag and drop software to build your site, thats just foolish because if you cancel them or they cancel you, you loose everything.

As to your domain name, yes, you can do that after the site is up. There is really no point in doing it before the site is ready anyway.
