what is the difference between mixing bowl & metal blade using food processor for pastry?

Actually I speak of a Braun - Food preparation Centre 5 - 1. There are 2 separate bowls one is supposed to be for mixing cakes & blending pastry and has a hook attachment - the other bowl has the metal blade. Most recipes read say to use the metal blade. I suppose I'll just have to try the hook & see what happens unless someone else has faced this riddle. Braun doesn't make these units any more & the contact via the Brawn listing on the Internet always says she will find out & call me back but never does. Here's the point the plastic surrounding the metal blade has developed a crack & I don't seem to be able to find out where I can get replacement.

If you use a normal mixer with 2 beaters it will press the dough together and make it tough. The trick to making good, flaky pastry is to cut the shortening into dry ingredients, keeping small lumps intact, then adding the water being careful not to over mix. Hope this helps.
