The instructions vary depending on your Internet provider. Since ATT is one of the largest users of these modems, try these steps.
- Open a web browser and navigate to http://192.168.1.254 . If that address doesn't work, look for the correct address on the label on the side of the gateway.
- You'll normally see one of two different menus. If you see "Home Network" across the top, click on that, then click on "Wireless Settings". The other menu type has "Wireless" prominent on the first page, which you'll need to select.
- You'll be taken to the wireless settings page, where you can make any necessary adjustments to your wifi. When you try to save any changes, you'll be asked for a password. The password is printed on the gateway's side label.

Log into it from a wired computer. You should be able to find a menu on it for wireless, maybe under the local network. I seem to remember that the types of wireless security it can do may be limited. By default it uses a 64(40)-bit hex WEP key (although, all digits for people who would be confused by characters a-f or A-F).
I don't remember if it can disable SSID broadcast, but that is false security anyway. It just makes it more difficult for you to connect or remain connected, because your computer cannot tell if it is still up without communicating with it, and any communication with it passes your SSID in the clear. That is why so called 64-bit WEP is really only 40-bit WEP.
The reason I cannot look at my 2Wire at the moment is because its wireless failed some time ago and I replaced it with a Motorola gateway.
