The signs the catalytic converter is bad is poor performance and the "check engine" warning light is on as the connector on your Taurus is under the hood near the battery to read for any trouble codes. As you get someone who has a scan tool with OBD I and II capabilities as they use the ford adapter to read for any trouble codes as the ones for the oxygen sensors pop up as the investigation leads to the bad catalytic converter and a huge bill for replacement. Another way the catalytic converter is bad is when you go for the annual inspection for renewal of your registration as the emissions test is part of the procedure as the agent at the testing center hands you a fail notice as the sheet explains the reasons for the failure. Before you get into serious trouble for having an unregistered motor vehicle you get the catalytic converter replaced and try to book a re-inspection.
