I've had my dog for 8 years now, and we have been trying to train her on and off to poop in the right area. For about 2 months now we have been training her consistently and watching if she poops in the right spot. Now she will poop in the right spot most of the time, but she will still poop in the wrong spot a bout twice a week. Recently I have been using positive reinforcement when she poops in the right spot. When she poops in the wrong spot I bring her to where she pooped and talk to her firmly and making her stay in one area after she poops in the wrong spot. Am I just doing it wrong or are there better methods?

Dogs dont want to poop in the exact same spot all the time (there's poop there). If she is pooping in the general area then thats pretty good. If you're talking about inside, TAKE HER OUT TO POOP!
My dog goes along the fence line, but within about 5 feet of it. Mostly to one side of the yard, but sometimes pretty well spread out.
It's easy to toilet train a dog. To do this:- - make a 'toileting area' for the puppy either with puppy training pads (available from supermarkets and pets at home, but cheaper in home bargains, in sources).
- if you can't get puppy pads, improvise with some old newspaper.
- set the 'toileting area' somewhere the dog can access it easily, but in an area with lower levels of foot traffic like at the side of a room, not the middle.
- if you see the dog sniffing in a tight circle, it's a sign they need to toilet. If the dog does this, take them to the 'toilet area' immediately. Also take them there immediately after they've woken up, had anything to eat or drink, first thing in the morning and last thing at night. These are the times when a dog is more likely to toilet.
- if the dog toilets in the 'toilet area', make sure you reward them with lots of praise. This way, they'll associate toileting in the 'toilet area' as good.
- gradually move the 'toilet area' further towards the door and then outside. The dog will gradually learn that toileting is to be done outside.
- if the dog does toilet in the home, don't get angry with the dog and never shout at or hit them, as this will only teach them to fear you. Instead, mop up any urine, pick poop up with a tissue, some loo roll or a plastic bag and throw it in the bin or flush it down the loo (not the bag, as it can block the loo). Immediately clean the soiled area with a solution of biological washing powder to remove the smell. That way, the dog doesn't associate the area with toileting, so they hopefully, won't 'go' there again.
- getting a 'pee post' (available from pets at home, also in sources) can be of great help too. This is a plastic post which the dog toilets onto. The smell then remains on it which the dog can detect, thus they toilet in the appropriate area again.
- Be consistent and patient. Toilet training is a slow process which can't be rushed.
- If you have difficulties training the dog, get a vet to examine them, as it could be down to a medical problem.
You're wasting your time. Some dogs prefer to keep their poop in one area and others scatter it around. However there's no training method for this.
Pick the poop up or you can gate off an area for your dog to go or you can just deal with it. I don't know what else to tell you but there's no way to comunicate to your dog that he has to poop in just one area
Take him out on leash for the next two months, and lead him to the spot you want. When he eliminates in that spot, give him happy praise and a pea sized bite of real meat or cheese.
Once he's learned, you still should reinforce his good behavior every few times, to keep him wanting to go where you want.
you're half there. i'd personally just be happy the dogs going outside being honest, its easy to clean up. when she is going in the right place, positive reinforcement every time, be consistant, when she goes in the wrong area, bring her to the right place. before this, you'll find it very helpful to teach her a cue word like 'pee' by saying it every time she goes and praising, then gradually say either 'pee, good girl' for the correct area, or bring her over from the wrong area to the good one and saying simply 'pee'. never give up, always be persistant and patient and eventually she will get it, though you'll want to be sure she doesn't have to step round 'landmines', that can put them off and make them expand on their toilet areas. my dogs have always found it easier to train to going in a particular area if it has a different surface from the undesirable one, like grass vs chuck-stones vs slabs etc. good luck
