Same as a regular size horse. Have a farrier come out every 6-8 weeks all year around. I'd strongly suggest you not try to do it yourself. You can damage a horse very badly that way!

Hi Joseph. Doc and Leegalen have it right. If you're thinking of doing it yourself, forget that. Call a farrier to do the job. Horses and ponies support their weight on their hooves so having them done by a farrier will keep them comfortable and help prevent the serious leg and foot problems that an incorrect trim can cause.

But perhaps your question is simply misworded? Perhaps you just wanted to know how often you should have them trimmed. In any case, please use a farrier.

It definitely varies. I have an 8 y/o mare whose feet have never once been trimmed. They stay perfect.

And then there are some horses who practically need it every month.

It depends on what you're feeding them. A rich diet means the hooves will grow more quickly. It also depends on how much exercise they get, on what types of surfaces, etc.

Like everyone else is saying, it's best to contact a farrier to have it done. A farrier understands the relationship between hoof and the rest of horse, and how important it is that the hoof is proportioned to the rest of the body.

A farrier will tell you how often he needs to come to trim them, it can vary from horse to horse, but 6-8 weekly is the average for most horses.

It's best to consult an experienced farrier for such things. An inexperienced owner can do serious injury to the critter that could actually end up with the horse's death. Long story short: If you have to ask, you shouldn't be doing it.
