Because many old wireless printers are out there that don't have WiFi direct. Lots of the new printers do have that feature, so you don't need a router unless you have an old printer. The Hp printer supports up to 5 clients at a time using WiFi direct.

We'll you need a router because your printer doesn't have its own wifi signal and since the router is the own giving of the signal to your phone , or laptop it's just a second or some times first way of getting the data to the printer from the external device hope this helps

The printer is looking for a network to use so it is using the WiFi to connect to the wireless router which is providing the network. Most printers also have a network port or a usb port.

A wireless printer allows you to connect both wired or wirelessly. It all depends on how you set it up.

If you don't want to use it wirelessly you don't need a wireless router just plug it into the router it will still work.

You only need a wireless router if you don't want to plug it into your router with a cable.

They are made to allow you the ability to put it anyplace that can be plugged into a power outlet within the distance the router can send the signal but ultimately its your choice if you want to use that function or not.

Actually, it is possible to set it up without a router. But then it would be that ONE computer connected to that ONE printer. Nothing else.
