Pretty sure computer has a virus?

I can't watch a video or .GIF for longer than 3 seconds if it even loads that much. Depending on what website I go to it will have 2 pop ups on the bottom. Randomly a download will start. My current anti-virus (Avast!) can't find anything, and when I try downloading a new antivirus, the download stops just a MB short. I have Windows 8, a system restore is possible, but not my first option so any suggestions are appreciated.

Also, when I do Google searches, there are way more advertisements than usual, and sometimes Facebook and other websites don't load at all, have an SSL error, and don't function correctly.

The pop ups are caused by the adware. You can try to uninstall the adware first.
For Chrome:
Open Chrome.
Click on the Chrome menu and select Settings.
Click on Extensions in the left side menu.
Remove/Disable the related extension.
Click Ok to save the changes.
For Internet Explorer
Click on “Tools” and select Manage add-ons.
Under Add-on Types, select Toolbars and Extensions.
Now select the add-on you want to remove the related malware and select Disable
Click OK to save the changes.
For Firefox
Open Mozilla Firefox.
From the Firefox orange button (or from the standard Tools menu), click on Add-ons.
Make sure Extensions is selected in the Add-ons manager left side menu bar
Look for the related items and remove them.
Click OK to save the changes.
