I have to replace a 25 year old electric range that is hardwired with a new 40 amp 240 volt range that uses a more modern 3-prong plug.?

I don't think the folks who deliver the new range will do as a routine installation. This leads to a bunch of questions:

Will I have to hire a licensed electrician to disconnect the old range and install a range receptacle for the new plug? How complex a job is this? How many hours will this work require? How much will the parts cost for this kind of work? (I will already have a 6 foot cord for the new range.) Can you give me an estimate of how much $$$ an electrician will charge for this work? (I live in NYC.) Any suggestions on finding a good electrician who does not charge too much $$$?

I know you cannot give me exact answers for all these questions. But any suggestions will help. I do a lot of DIY work in my apt. But I am afraid to mess around with electrical work.

Thanks a lot for your advice!!

It isn't that hard a job. Turn off the breaker, disconnect the old range and install the new box and outlet. The electrician really needs a look or at least a picture of the back of the new range. Some have only a small indentation for plug clearance and if the outlet isn't situated properly the range won't slide all the way back against the wall. Hourly rates vary and I imagine NYC has as high an hourly rate as any place. Still I couldn't envision the job taking more that 2 hours and probably less if the wire for the present range is in decent shape. If that wire has to be replaced due to deterioration over many years then there's no way of telling how long the job could take.

If 'install' means anything more than 'deliver', the installer can disconnect the hardwired range and install an outlet in less than 5 min. It can't hurt to ask them in advance, but if they can't handle the electrical, the ONLY thing they are doing is physically moving the new stove into your kitchen.
