Starlings keep robbing a Sparrows nest. How do I get rid of them?

Question

Normally we would allow nature to take it's course but this nest is right next to our front door. They came by last year and threw the babies out of the nest and they died. Then they would cover our door in big puddles of poop all over our porch and front door. I know something shiny near the nest will scare off the starlings but will it run off the sweet little sparrows too? Being disabled and house bound I get a great deal of joy watching the sparrows nest. Please help!

Shoot them, they are a best and menace. We have Blue Jays nesting, but the starlings won't take the Blue Jays on, and the cats do a good job also.

To me, both species are absolute pests. If you must favor one over the other a gun is your best option. Something that will accommodate 'rat shot' which equals a shot gun in that the projectile doesn't travel far (and hit your neighbor or his house). There is 22 caliber 'snake shot' also known as long rifle and is OK in a 22 pistol.  But there are deterrents that are more 'civilized'. You might get an owl w/a floating head found at garden centers. That will deter nest building but cats are fantastic of your area allows roaming, vaccinated pets. The trouble with the latter two is that it will probably deter all species to build.
