What would be the effect on an economy if power was free?

I heard that studies in the fifties showed that the US GNP would drop if power was free, they were looking into it because they were optimistic about the prospects for nuclear power.

Since the production of energy is part of GNP it would it would fall short term if it were to happen tomorrow, but in the long term it would not decrease since the money we spend on energy we would spend on other things.
