How does energy production work?

How does energy work? Does the government produce it and then sell it to electric companies and such? Or do electric companies produce it themselves from wind, solar, coal, etc.

I know this is a weird question, but it's something I've always wondered.

Where I'm from you could drive past two power-generation sites within 30 minutes of each-other on the same highway. Each was owned by the company who produced the electricity, who then sold it to the consumers.

I'm not sure about the government giving the electrical companies money for producing electricity, like Mindy had mentioned, other than for their own electric bills, and I'm not sure about them working "for" the government, per-say, either.

To produce energy various ways are there for it. To do this some companies are under the government and some are under any corporate. Government give grants and other help for them

Government gives money to electric companies to produce it. No electric companies not produce it themselves. Electric companies works for Government.
