How often should I wash my makeup brushes?

I'm currently washing all of them out once per week and when I change the color of makeup, for example if I switch using a different colored eyeshadow or lip gloss. I would obviously also wash them if I ever had an eye infection or cold sore. I generally let them air dry, but use my hair dryer if I'm in a hurry to get them dry.

The makeup brushes I use are as follows:-
- powder brush (I don't use a foundation brush)
- blusher brush
- eyeshadow brush
- eyebrow/eyelash brush/combs (one to keep my eyebrows neat and one to remove any clumps in my mascara
- old mascara wand from a previous mascara I used. A trick I learned to save money is to buy a more expensive mascara once, then wash and save the wand once it's run out. After that, apply new, cheaper mascara with the wand that comes with it, then use the old one to fluff and separate the lashes.
- lip brush (only sometimes. If I use a lipstick which isn't down to the end bit and a lip gloss which comes with an applicator, I obviously won't need the lip brush).

Also, what should I use to wash them with? I've used shampoo which works well, normal soap and hand wash for sensitive skin (not all together). Are these best or would I be better using a different cleaner?

Use baby shampoo!! It works really well. Any one would work but Johnson's would be best. I usually wash them whenever they look dirty, if not once a month.

I wash my eye brushes and powder brushes about once a month at most, but I wash my foundation/concealer brushes every couple of weeks as cream/liquid products are obviously messier.

If you are prone to break-outs, I would suggest washing foundation and concealer brushes more often, maybe once a week, as you don't want any bacteria to be lurking in there.

I was mine with a gentle bar soap as soon as my foundation brush starts to feel less than perfect against my skin. At the moment I wash every three days. Mind, I also remove my makeup before exercising and reapply after as I exercise in the middle of the day. I apply my makeup more often than someone who hits the gym after work or before work.

I've been told that you need to wash at least weekly if you regularly use them, and no more frequently than every second day unless they are being used on multiple faces.

I wash my brushes once a week. I use Neutrogena fresh foaming cleanser to wash my brushes. This cleanser is a makeup remover so it does a great job of cleaning the brushes.

I would wash them as often as you feel the brush getting sticky.
