How can I recover my 'downloads' file from my mac trash?

Question

Accidentally deleted my download file into trash.  All my pictures are there.  How can I 1) recover the pictures/other data and 2) put the downloads icon back on my desktop?

I do not want to buy software to do this.

There must (?) be a way to do this.  I am new to mac and don't want to make things worse by playing around with it.

Would system restore work?  Where is system restore on my macbook air?

Well, that's just perfect Fred.  Now 'downloads' has disappeared from my trash selections and it's not on my desktop.

Update.  Was able to restore it.  However I cannot see 'downloads' to drag.  I can only see each individual file.  And my downloads icon is gone.

Drag the folder out of trash to the desktop.

Right click.  Restore.  And they will all go back to where they came from.
