Which UK broadband provider gives the best value for money?

Just managed to ditch Virgin despite their tactics to discourage me from leaving them. Now looking for a decent provider. I am fed up with Sky, Virgin, BT Talk Talk and the other big sharks.

Watch out for the cheap introductory offers. They look good, but after the introductory period prices can be quite high.

Line rental can be a significant factor. Most seem to charge £15 to £16 per month. Look for line rental savers. Pay monthly/quarterly charges by direct debit. Free call packages can also be a worthwhile addition if you make a lot of phone calls.

What do you want from your service? What speed? Do you need a fibre optic connection either to the cabinet or right to your property? Do you want free WiFi access around the country and in other places across the world? How many GB do you want to use each month? If you go over the limit for your package do you want the speed to drop or do you want to pay a surcharge (obviously this does not apply if you have an unlimited package)?

Although there are a number of different providers, many rely on BT Openreach to provide the connection to your home. BT Openreach is a different company from BT Broadband, but in my experience BT are good at sorting out line problems including engineer visits to determine where the problems are..

I have been with BT for many years, and apart from intermittent problems with my line last year I have had excellent service from them. When my contract expires each year, I give them a call and discuss what is the best deal they can offer for the package I want. Quite often I get 30% to 50% discount off the published prices.

I have free access to BTWiFi services from over a million hotspots around the country. Great when I am on holiday. I can also use my smartphone anywhere in the world where I can connect to the Internet by WiFi. The BT Smart App allows me to make calls that are charged at my home landline rates. No roaming charges, and calls to UK landlines are free for me as I have the anytime call package at home.

You will have to decide what is best for you.
