Looking for some oppinions...?

I have a ten year old rott-black lab cross...who acts like he is two. We have fed him Nutro exclusively throughout his life. My step son got a puppy last week; mom was a yellow lab shepard mix and no idea what the father was. The pup is only 5 weeks old, but has apparently been to the vet and is in good health. My step sons mother feeds it 'Kibbles-n-Bits'. Son and puppy stay with us on the weekends, sometimes longer, and I personally do not think that the brand of food that 'Sam' is being fed is good for him, but that is not my choice to make. My main concern is the puppy's young age and what would be best to feed him while he is at our house. My initial thought is to stick with what he is being fed when he is not with us, mainly to avoid digestive problems, but could someone offer some info on this? I have always been a cat person, and even though I have had a dog myself for a while, I am still not very dog savy. (sp) Any info would be much appreciated. I want Sam to be healthy and I want to do my best to ensure a long and happy life. I do not know why the pup was taken from his mother so early. Thank you in advance!

I know that this is not my dog. I am just trying to do the best that I can for it, regarding its age and what he has been accustomed to. If it makes ay difference, I get along very well with my step son's other.

Tough question, but i bet we can all agree "Kibbles n Bits" is not what the pup needs to eat. I wouldn't change the food until he is older because his stomach must be even more sensitive than average, because he is so young. Keep feeding him as is, and when he is older ( and i mean a few weeks older) try to gradually switch to a puppy food, of course if his owner allows and agrees to it.

You're right about one thing...Kibbles N Bits is a really crappy food BUT this is NOT your puppy, and you just can't change it's food back and forth when it comes to your house on the weekends.  Any time there's a food change, it should be a gradual one, over about a period of a week or so.  If you start feeding this puppy the Nutro on the weekends, it will end up with diarrhea in which this young puppy will dehydrate quickly.  You can SUGGEST to this boy's Mom that *Kibbles* isn't the best food choice, but that's all you can do.  When the puppy comes to your house, if that Mom doesn't bring you what the puppy is eating, then you go out a buy a bag of it so the pup does not end up with severe diarrhea.  Just for the record, Nutro foods are *not all that* either, IMO, but probably still better than Kibbles N Bits.  Still, don't make any sudden changes to that pups food.

The only thing that I can say is that FIVE WEEK OLD puppies should still be with their mother.  Your stepson obviously hasn't just got his puppy (within the last day or so).

No puppy is ready to leave the mother before it's 8 weeks old.

he also should be getting puppy food.

If it was me I would not change his food when he is with you. All it will do is cause stomach issues. Even though what he is being fed sucks. All you can do is try to explain that the puppy needs to have a better quality of food. Hell even Puppy chow is better then Kibble and bits. But unless they change it then keep him on it to help keep his tummy right.
