My sister was telling about an actor who was an occasional guest star on a sitcom where he pretended to be mentally challenged in order to have his family provide his living. But the main character found out about it and later told everyone. I'm thinking it was Suddenly Susan or Just Shoot Me.

Definitely Just Shoot Me. The photographer, Elliot DiMauro, had a brother named Donnie played by David Cross (Tobias from Arrested Development). Chicken-pot-chicken-pot-chicken-pot-pie!
