What up with this hide answer thing. Is it for askers to mess with answers that they don't like?

No, the askers are not responsible for that, and no user can control it. It seems like a computer algorithm that Yahoo devised checks answers for "relevancy" and if they are not long enough, not accurate enough, or just crap, then they get hidden. It's part of the new feature that some users have that sorts answers by relevancy instead of post time or rating.
