Setting up a checking account:
1. You don't usually need an appointment; you typically sign-in at the customer service area and wait for a bank rep to call your name.
2. You will need to have a picture ID and Social Security number and possibly one reference.
3. You will need to have some money or a check to deposit in your account
4. Depending on bank and average balance you plan to maintain, there are usually some account fees, either a monthly maintenance fee or a fee for each check written but if you keep a large balance of over a thousand or two, the bank may waive these fees. There will also be a fee for your check printing.

You don't need to make an appointment. All you need is a form of identification and your social security number, besides some of your money, that is. The SSN is necessary for tax purposes as the interest earned is taxable by the government.

To take advantage of special offers (like free checking) sometimes there is a minimum deposit.

If you will want a co-signer (someone who can access your funds for you), they should join you as they will need to sign some paperwork, too.
