One in every four women back then was named "Mary". And the characters of unnamed women tended to get combined with the characters of named women. So "Mary Magdalene" (from whom demons were cast out) becomes combined with Mary the sister of Lazarus and Martha (who is the one who did the amointing) and the unnamed prostitute (who only appears in the Gospel of John, is never named, and is a late addition to the story).

She was not a prostitue. Sha was Lasazius sister.
The prostitue was not the person who rub his feet with her hair. She was the women who was going to get stoned.

Don't know. JC never existed so it's quite likely the story was fabricated too.

It was kind of inevitable. The Church was divesting itself of all signs that it had ever had ANY respect for women.
They felt they had to do this because they wanted the Church to be more "acceptable" to the public.

A Roman Catholic priest started it.
