What's the saddest thing that happen to a race fan's favorite driver?

Is it sadder if the driver dies or is alive and can't race? My favorite driver has MS and there's that F1 driver with a bad head injury. Many racers have died over the years, Dale Earnhardt and Dan Wheldon come to my mind. I know some of these are NASCAR and others are open wheel, but I follow all these series to some degree.

I think they are both sad. It's sad when someone dies - I cried for three days together when Simoncelli was killed. But I think it's also sad when a driver is rendered incapacitated with little to no chance of full recovery, let alone racing again. Like Jules, or Michael. They're sad for different reasons in different ways.

Simoncelli was a future MotoGP champion for sure, an exciting rider just moving up in the world.

Bianchi was a Ferrari Junior driver, living his dream in F1 and almost guaranteed a drive with Ferrari in 2016 (when Raikkonen retires).

And Schumacher, though retired from racing, has a wife and two children who he loves dearly and love him also.

All who loose their life or are seriously injured affect me but the worst was Feb 18, 2001, when Dale died. I took an interest in Nascar and racing the year Dale began racing. I took an interest in him right away as a rookie (I was very young and liked the young talent over the experienced) and followed him until the day he died. I also began following Jr when he began racing as well as Michael Waltrip when he drove for DEI. When Dale died I couldn't watch for the rest of the year. It was too hard. I tried but I would get too emotional. It really hit me hard. In my opinion, it'll just never be the same. Those were the best days.

Kulwicki's death had an impact on me, coming off a championship and all. But overall I think Adam Petty is the saddest. He didn't even get a friggin' chance. Not to mention being a fourth generation driver of one of NASCAR's greatest families. Senna's IndyCar death was also pretty sad. This is probably due to the fact that I watched the movie "Senna." My wife's not a big IndyCar fan but even she was kinda glued to the set over all of the politics that had an impact on the sport.

Die during a race or practice
like Scott Kolliita died a week or so after wining a NHRA even in Chicago
Adam Petty died during practice
Dale Earnhardt died during a race
Dan Wheldon died during a race
Neil Bonnet dying in a tack accident
many more could be listed just as well

The saddest thing obviously is when they die. Ill never forget Feb 18, 2001. I shed a few tears that day. I wasn't a Big E fan either.
When Dan Wheldon died it was sad too.
