How can someone boot (for example, windows 7) through a network (network boot, if you will)?

I need to install win 7 on a friends blank laptop. I have my computer on my disposal and it's the only option because it will not recognize windows 7 on an usb flash drive, in BIOS.

If you have a bootable custom Windows PE image (as regular bootable Windows discs are installers), you can set up a TFTP server and have the computer boot over PXE.

Make a bootable copy of the usb windows 7. The network thing will not work. A legal copy of the QS is the only good way to go. i

network booting requires set up which is not easy. I am network administrator and I was not able to set it up, so your best bet is optical disc, by the way give us the model number of the computer maybe there is some settings in bios you need to access first to enable Usb booting.

You can not. You would need a properly configured DNS server, DHCP server and bootp server on the network, then you would need the boot image to be stored correctly on the server. Much easier to use the proper Microsoft OS disk. Unless you have a legal unused copy you will not get it to activate anyway.

You need to make a bootable CD and get the knackered PC to boot from CD rom
