What can be done about the very young pigeon with a broken wing that's been there for 5 days?

Take it to a local avian veterinarian if it's easily captured. Call animal control otherwise. It is likely in pain and suffering and requires medical attention. Imagine if you had broken an arm and didn't have any pain meds. If not treated properly, the bones may heal such that the bird will never be able to fly and will be more susceptible to predation (best case scenario).

There's a pigeon with a broken wing on San Jose Ave. (where it passes under the 280 freeway in SF near the Daly City border). When I first saw it about 5 days ago, it was in the middle of the street, lying on its back, flapping one wing, with a bunch of feathers strewn about. I kicked it closer to the sidewalk (gently) and left it there.

Later I found it on the sidewalk next to the concrete wall, about 50 feet from the blue porta-potty that the bus drivers use. I started giving it food and water. I had to teach it how to drink from a little plastic tub.

About 20 pigeons have their nests in the nooks under the freeway above. I've been using them to teach the little one how to eat. It won't eat anything unless it sees other pigeons eating it. I've now got it trained to recognize sunflower seeds, but it still gets confused by the dark color.

They say it only takes 4-6 weeks for a wing to heal all by itself. The bird looks a little smaller than fledgling size, but just a little. I can't take it home because of my share-rental situation. It doesn't even need to be indoors, just out of the rain, and preferably protected from feral cats, raccoons, rats, skunks, and other wildlife.

If you know of anyone I can contact about this problem, please let me know. I'm reluctant to call animal control because they might "dispose" of it. (Feral animals don't enjoy the same legal protections as wild or domestic.)

Get on you tube and see how to set the wing. They demonstrate with a live pigeon. Good Luck!

I would take it to a vet. They will probably take it in, fix it's wing, and then find out if they will let it go or keep it due to its injuries. Good luck

Call wildlife control to come and get it. It needs to be taken to a vet.
