Fifty years ago a student told me that?

a professor of the requied 300-level survey of Spanish literature course announced that no grade of A would be given and that A-minus would be difficult to achieve. Do you think there may have been a legitimate reason? I think an appropriate response would have to ask why prof's teaching does not support top-level work.

That was 50 years ago. The teacher was trying to uphold high standards. That would never happen today- the students would immediately complain. Grade escalation has made B the average grade in most colleges, with As being more and more common.
