I was playing with my family (one of the members was pregnant) and then I saved the game, exited to main menu, and took a break for a couple of hours. When I went back to the game, the baby had been born and assigned a name. I hadn't played with the family when the baby was born or gave it a name, it was by itself. Why? Do the sims grow up/babies are born without player interaction? Thanks

Something tells me that someone played your game in your absence. The Sims 4, just like all the other Sims games so far, do not make things happen when not being played.
There is no way the game would name the baby for you, even with the game running. It would only stay there, paused, waiting for you to input a name.
If there is no one who would play the game besides you, then maybe there's a ghost at your place having fun playing TS4... just kidding. :)
