The fridge door fell off while its door was wide opens?

It s about 35 yrs old and we can t afford to replace it at this time. We discovered that there are no fasteners to replace. It is simply a matter of reassembling it correctly, which for us was a two person job to get top and bottom done at the same time.

What was likely wrong and where should we look for a fix to avoid it happening another time?

Most likely the top or bottom door pivot bracket screws have worked loose or stripped. You would have to inspect the bracket screws and holes they go into to see if you can screw them back tightly in place...or use over size screws if they or the holes are stripped...take the old screws to a hardware store and get some slightly bigger or coarser thread/self-tapping screws.. Some door pivot brackets mount to the top or face of the fridge and some lower ones mount underneath...you may have to tilt and prop up the front of the fridge on a 2 X 4 or thick books to get access to reinstall the lower screws. Use the right size wrench and don't overtighten. Search the web with the brand and model number to get pics at appliance parts websites of how the door brackets/screws install. Hopefully, it'll be good for another decade or so....recheck the brackets / screws periodically and retighten if needed.
