Go to photozone.de which will show you comparisons between the various models. The Nikon brand will generally focus faster which is more important when using a 70-200 than a 28-70.

The 50mm is pretty short as well. Using it to take photos during a game indoors just isn't feasible

The ideal lens would be a fast zoom, like a 70-200 f/2.8.

Neither 35mm nor 50mm is good for capturing up close indoor action shots. You need at least 70mm and you need a "fast" lens of around f/2.0 to prevent blurring in low light. It also helps if your camera performs well at high ISO -- low noise.

Nikon 35mm f/1.8 or the Nikon 50mm?
I was planning on getting the 35mm but now I'm afraid I might have to get very close to the court to capture the actions.
What if I'm sitting on the front bleacher in a high school gym? Will the 35mm be good enough or should I go for the 50mm?
