First, this question is in the wrong category.
Second, from my knowledge from back in history class... it was supposed to be held it front of the whole town I believe.
Third, I think I remember that they didn't just burn them they also tortured them.
I suggest going to youtube.com, searching "Crash course", and searching for a video on the history of witches.
This is hard to describe because I haven't spoken of this for many of years and because it was different for each society/country/culture
