On our microwave the start button beeps when pressed but does not activate the cooking....is that a fixable problem if taken in for repair?

It may be fixable but the guy would charge you a lot more than it's worth. Just buy a new one.

Here in the UK we can buy microwaves from the supermarket for £25.  These days they are a throw a way item.
