I heard you have to buy power cords separately from lamps and appliances in the UK. Is this true, and why?

No, all lamps and other electric appliances are sold with a cord and plug attached. If you want a longer cord you can buy a separate extension lead.

Many years ago things didn't always have a plug attached, but they always had a cord.
