Im running a high performance computer with a later version of I5 from two to three years ago. Can I just pop it out and put in a I7 (also I will need to take off the fan thats on top of the CPU but I don't think that will be a problem.)

2-3 years ago, it is possible that your system is a 1155 socket.
If the processors are the same socket, maybe only a BIOS update will be needed.
You have some homework to do. A pre built, you will have to visit the manufactures site and see if the i7 was offered with that system. And any update to accommodate the larger CPU.
Same with a retail motherboard as in one self built. I know Asus shows for every board application, a list of CPU's the will run a particular board with the BIOS information update also.

Look up the existing mother board. If the CPU socket is a LGA1150 then it will work.
But ... why? If you are gaming - a good i5 gives the same performance as an i7.
The i7 buys you speed if you are transcoding video or video editing.
If you are gaming - a 3 year newer video card might be a better (and cheaper) investment.

You can fit an i7 if it is the same socket format as your existing i5.
Whether it is worth doing so, is the more pertinent question. Probably not.

If it's the same socket as your motherboard then yes and you will also need some thermal paste to put on it
