I'm keeping a puppy out of our Miniature Schnauzer's litter (if you came here just to tell me I'm evil for having a litter of puppies you can leave now) and she is currently 4 weeks old. I've been holding her a couple hours a day and then putting her back in the play pen with her mom and the other pups, until she gets weaned. But my question is, if she turns out like her mom who wants to be pet a little and then go off by herself or to the other dogs, can I get her to want to me with me? Since I'm trying to get her bonded with me especially at such a young age, can she be a lap dog, one that will follow me room to room like my chihuahua does? And if so, tips please? Thanks.

Dogs have their own spirits and personalities. Some are lap dogs and some are not. I have a 17 year old Yorkie Poo, and he's never ever been a lap dog. He follows me from room to room and lets me pet him, but he wont sit on my lap, or even sleep with me. He usually likes to stay about 3 feet away from me. As long as I am in his sight, he is happy. If I leave the room and he isn't aware that I've left, he will search the house looking for me.
You can't teach a dog to be a lap dog.She either will or he wont.
You are doing a great job. Breathe on her nose, let her know your scent. Touch each toe, ears, put your hands in her mouth so that she learns that her mouth belongs to you. This will help when the vet checks her too. You can teach her to want to be a lap dog and follow you anywhere. You are starting off as if you were a trainer. Good Job.
If you don't like the dam's temperament, why did you breed her? Why are you keeping a puppy from a dog and expecting the pup to have a radically different temperament than the dam?
It takes many generations of careful, thoughtful breeding before you start seeing temperaments that are "set" in any predictable way. If you don't have that behind this litter, then don't expect a miracle (and I hope you at least bothered to health test the sire and dam and have a clue what is in their pedigrees? otherwise the question you SHOULD be asking is how much will health insurance cost for this dog for if/when she ends up with health problems down the road).
Its a dog. Not a toy. If you want something to treat like a toy then get a toy. If you didn't liek the dams bad temper then why the hell did you bred the odg? All the puppies will have the dams bad temper and will be dumped in shelters.
