I remember a story about Martin Luther walking through the woods one winter night. The snow was either already on the trees or just coming down. As he neared town he noticed the lights of the houses shining through the trees limbs.
When he got back to town he put small candles on the branches of a pine tree to try to replicate what he had seen on his walk.
By doing this, he is supposed to be the first one to put candles on Christmas trees.
They still use candles on trees in Germany (I lived there for 9 years), but they only burn them for a short time, like when they open presents on Christmas eve.
Today we use lights indoors for safety reasons.
