I doubt they'll ever be mandatory. I mean, hybrids aren't even mandatory. Why would a self driving vehicle be? If they were to come out though, I don't think it would be that soon. A lot would have to take place such as advances in technology. If and when they do come out, I would never get one. I am not putting my life in the hands of a motorized vehicle.

I said "mandatory" because the government will mandate it. And since the government holds the cards (funding) for highways and roads, it can say what is operated on those roads. Today's vehicles must comply with strict guidelines, from windshields to tires to exhaust emissions. Twenty years ago the technology was not available. Today it is. There is even a driverless (remote controlled) vehicle on Mars.

You will still be driving vehicles in 2099. Driverless will not take off for a long time. Roads need to be rebuilt. GPS mapping can't even push automatic updates, without you paying for them and are outdated before you load them. There are so many things that need to be implemented, and it will take more than 3 -4 generations to make them acceptable, never mind mandatory.

not mandatory, but an option. If self-driving vehicles are available then people may opt to paid for transportation services than buying a new car.

I am never going to own one thats for sure.
taking away everything we own including our cars to me feels like the world is just going to be one big jail in the future run by smart@ss intellectual types.
and before anyone says "what about the people who die every day?" well the people who crash into other peoples cars should have been allowed to drive in the first place, even alcoholics can get licenses , cut them out and the roads would be safe without any of this techno none sense which WILL get into a accident some point in time.
