What option would you do for a long distance move?
Next year I will be relocating from San Diego to New Jersey for work (2,900 miles). I don't have many big things to move and will be selling most large things like my bed, etc before I leave. Everything should fit in the smallest rental truck or trailer.
Option 1) Rent a small truck from Penske along with a car trailer to tow my Camry. Most reliable option but not cost effective.
($1800 truck + $200 tow trailer + $800 fuel = $2,800 give or take)
Option 2) Buy an F-250 or similar with a shell on the back, then sell the truck when I get to Jersey. I believe the truck market in Jersey isn't as strong in San Diego so I'd probably lose a few hundred dollars, it also takes time to register and sell the truck. Will need to rent a tow trailer for my Camry.
($5,000 truck + $500 maintenance prep + $800 fuel + $300 tow trailer - $4500 truck resale = $2,100*)
Option 3) I love my Camry but it has a lot of miles so I could sell it and buy a mid size pick-up like a Dodge Dakota. Then rent a 5' by 8' trailer and tow it behind ( could even buy then sale the trailer but it's a small hassle). When I got to Jersey the truck would be my main car but not main transportation, subway, bus etc. Trucks are always handy for buying large items plus I love trucks.
($7,000 truck + $500 maintenance prep + $600 trailer rental + $700 fuel - $5000 for the Camry = $3,800)
What would you do? Anything I'm forgetting? I'm aware there isn't food and hotel calculated. Thank you for your input!
