whats the cost to repair head gasket on 2000 subaru outback 68000 miles?

The 2000 outback had their 2.5L H-4 (horizontally opposed 4 cylinder engine).

This engine was prone to premature head gasket failures and its a known issue. Its unusual for it to fail at 68k miles, but a this point the age of the car is more important than the mileage.

The repair is complex and requires the dealer to pull the engine from the car to access the gaskets. Since they already have the engine out of the car it makes sense to fix or replace anything else that might go bad during the life of the car.

My local dealership quoted me a maximum price of $2400. This means they pull the engine, replace the gaskets, then go through a long checklist of other items and replace whatever components are showing signs of wear. If they do every item on the list the price is $2400 but everything they decide isn't necessary knocks the price down. The end result is that most engine reseal services come in around $1500-$1800.

That's pretty steep for a car that old. But, you're addressing almost all the critical items that could be major issues in the next few years, so you *should* have a relatively reliable/trouble-free vehicle once the reseal service is complete. But you still have a suspension, transmission, etc that are 16 years old, so its up to you whether or not to proceed.

If you have a HG bad with only 68k miles need to find out Why before getting work done. This is unusual for HG to go that soon
